| Adolf Hitler DNA" Studies Create Waves" Posted: 11 Feb 2011 11:17 PM PST  San Francisco : A new research claims that there might be scientific proof after all that indicates that the German dictator Adolf Hitler might have had Jewish origins after all. Though there have been several claims earlier, none of the studies have been able to scientifically pinpoint how the Nazi, responsible for the deaths of millions of Jews, had an African-Jewish lineage. Reporter Jean Paul Mulders and Marc Vermeeren conducted the study with the help of DNA studies of the saliva samples from 39 of Adolf Hitler's relatives across America and Europe. Reports indicate that the duo had even searched out Adolf Hitler's cousin, Norbert H of Austrian origin. The research found that the DNA contained a chromosome that was rare in people from Western Europe and more common among the Ashkenazi and Shephardic Jews and also the people living in Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. Considering the Nazi's fixation with ancestry, one of the experts said that he would not have appreciated the research. Another genetic expert said that though the research cannot pinpoint the exact origins of Adolf Hitler, it almost proves that he was not an 'Aryan' a race that he tried to establish by 'cleansing' Europe of the others. The chromosome called Haplogroup E1b1b (Y-DNA), found in the DNA samples, is considered one of the founding lineages of the Jewish population. The scientists have explained that the research validates a historical myth that has been the cause of speculation for decades now. Earlier it was claimed that Adolf Hitler's grandfather was a Jew but due to lack of scientific evidence or availability of any DNA sample, the claim could not be validated.Source  |
| Scientists Discovered Richest Planetary System Posted: 11 Feb 2011 11:15 PM PST  "We have found what is most likely the system with the most planets yet discovered," said Christophe Lovis as saying. "Studies of planetary motions in the new system reveal complex gravitational interactions between the planets and give us insights into the long-term evolution of the system," he added. The five strongest signals correspond to planets with Neptune-like masses - between 13 and 25 Earth masses - which orbit the star with periods ranging from about 6 to 600 days. These planets are located between 0.06 and 1.4 times the Earth-Sun distance from their central star. Amongst the other two planets that could exist, one would be a Saturn-like planet (with a minimum mass of 65 Earth masses) orbiting in 2200 days. The other would be the least massive exoplanet ever discovered, with a mass of about 1.4 times that of the Earth. So far, astronomers know of fifteen systems with at least three planets. The last record-holder was 55 Cancri, which contains five planets, two of them being giant planets. Another important result found by the astronomers is that there is a relationship between the mass of a planetary system and the mass and chemical content of its host star. For children whose adult teeth have not shown yet, fluoride still improves tooth enamel, the highly mineralized tissue on teeth's surface. Fluoride also helps teeth damaged from the decay process and breaks down bacteria on teeth. The researchers write that respondents who did not live in the same county their entire lives received differing amounts of fluoride in their water, which complicated study findings. The study, which focused on tooth loss as an indication of overall oral health, could not adjust for factors such as use of toothpaste, which also provides a dose of fluoride. To prevent tooth decay, Howard Pollick, a professor of clinical dentistry at the University of California, San Francisco recommends also brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and reducing sugar levels in diet.Source  |

The observations show that impacts on the giant planet occur more frequently than previously thought. The last two attacks occurred in June 2010 and July 2009. Before these three events were recorded, the only definite case of an asteroid or a comet colliding with Jupiter was in 1994 - a collision with fragments of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. So many observations in such a short period is probably because of a technique that makes sharp still images by combining the clearest frames from a video recording, says Glenn Orton of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. "The results are quite impressive," New Scientist quoted Orton as saying. Orton and a group of astronomers led by Australian amateur Anthony Wesley have suggested setting up a worldwide network of small, automated telescopes to continuously monitor Jupiter for impacts.Source  |

| Deficiency of Vitamin D Linked to Wide Array of Diseases Posted: 11 Feb 2011 10:40 PM PST  Now, researchers at the University of Oxford have shown the extent to which vitamin D interacts with our DNA. They used new DNA sequencing technology to create a map of vitamin D receptor binding across the genome. The vitamin D receptor is a protein activated by vitamin D, which attaches itself to DNA and thus influences what proteins are made from our genetic code. The researchers found 2,776 binding sites for the vitamin D receptor along the length of the genome. These were unusually concentrated near a number of genes associated with susceptibility to autoimmune conditions such as MS, Crohn's disease, systemic lupus erythematosus (or 'lupus') and rheumatoid arthritis, and to cancers such as chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and colorectal cancer. They also showed that vitamin D had a significant effect on the activity of 229 genes including IRF8, previously associated with MS, and PTPN2, associated with Crohn's disease and type 1 diabetes. "Our study shows quite dramatically the wide-ranging influence that vitamin D exerts over our health," said Dr Andreas Heger from the MRC Functional Genomics Unit at Oxford, one of the lead authors of the study. "There is now evidence supporting a role for vitamin D in susceptibility to a host of diseases. Vitamin D supplements during pregnancy and the early years could have a beneficial effect on a child's health in later life. Some countries such as France have instituted this as a routine public health measure," added the first author of the paper, Dr Sreeram Ramagopalan from the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics. The main source of vitamin D in the body comes from exposing the skin to sunlight, although a diet of oily fish can provide some of the vitamin. A lack of vitamin D can affect bone development, leading to rickets; in pregnant mothers, poor bone health can be fatal to both mother and child at birth, hence there are selective pressures in favour of people who are able to produce adequate vitamin D.Source  |

Fisherman Chen Wu, who netted the fish in Juexi town in Yibin county, told reporters that he never saw that type of fish before, People's Daily reported Monday. He alerted the water resources department after villagers told him it could be a Chinese sturgeon, a protected fish. | Spectacular Telescope Captures Galactic Super Volcanic Explosion Posted: 11 Feb 2011 10:24 PM PST  Astronomers said shock waves between a giant black hole and cooling gas, caused the mind boggling explosion, reports the Telegraph. The explosion then blasted through the "massive" Messier 87 galaxy more than 50 million light years away. One light year is the equivalent of 5.9 trillion miles. Researchers said the black hole powered the "galactic super-volcano" and prevented hundreds of millions of new stars from being formed. They said that normally such stars would form in the galaxy when "superheated" gas cooled but this particular blast interrupted that process. Nasa said the cosmic "eruption" was very similar to the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland, which shot plumes of ash and smoke into the atmosphere and caused chaos for world travel earlier this year. "With Eyjafjallajokull, pockets of hot gas blasted through the surface of the lava, generating shock waves that can be seen passing through the grey smoke of the volcano," a NASA spokesperson said.Source ---- Image Source  |
